‘Frame’ embraces the symbolism of a window frame and the window as a mediating layer between us and the outside world. In this work, the colors echo a traditional Japanese palette like the one I learned with as a kid. It represents a return to basics and a forced restriction to minimalism. This piece is a soothing, meditative counter balance to a hectic outer world.
ABOUT THE SERIES
Windows is a series about the coronavirus pandemic. The theme of this series is mediated contact — through the windows we saw each other in every day, and across the spaces we were required to keep between one another. These pieces aim to capture the sense of disconnection between days, experiences, and people, all see through colorful rectangles. The series doesn’t explore the impact of forced separation, but instead looks at how this space was kept: the self-imposed separation is represented by not using tape or masking fluid for these works. However, even though the rectangles don't touch, they still influence one another: colors appear across multiple rectangles, visualizing shared experiences and emotions.
